Chocolat

This last spring I started work on a redesigned title sequence for the movie Chocolat. I have found that my lest favorite title sequences are the ones where the film begins and the titles are just slapped on top of the image wherever there is space. This was the style of opening titles in Chocolat. In my opinion, if this is how you want to do your title sequence, you may as well not even have one. That’s not to say that titles have to have their own separate sequence. There are quite a few films that start right into the story and incorporate titles that work really well because of the way they are incorporated within the image.

So with this project, I wanted to experiment with integrating the typography into the sequence. I wanted to make the typography have equal visual weight as the imagery of the film and to make everything appear as seamless as possible. This wasn’t perfect by any means but was, as I mentioned, an experiment. I really learned a lot from both the mistakes and the things that really seemed to work well. And after about an hour or so of shooting, I got really sick of the smell of chocolate. But I have gotten over that now and can enjoy chocolate once again.

Special thanks to everyone that helped me with this project: Dora, Natalia, Joella, Tiera, Jorrien, Jocilyn, and Wendy. There is no way I could have made any of these delicious treats without their help. I can barely make cookies from a mix that just adds water.

USU Baseball

Recently I filmed the USU Baseball team and put together these two short films. It was the first time I have tried doing something with this style. I really liked this style and am thinking of other ways to use it. There are a number of things that I will plan to change next time I make something with this high contrast style and slow motion. It was definitely a good learning experience and hopefully round two will be much better.

Snow Day

For one of my classes I am taking this semester I had to put together a 2 minute montage video. Normally I really hate cold weather but love seeing beautiful photographs of snowy scenes. So on Saturday morning I woke up early and captured some footage and a few still photographs as well. Then I gathered up some older footage and put together this little video. I’m still trying to warm up from all that cold weather.

2012 Annual Report

2012AnnualReport-011Last year I discovered Nicholas Felton’s personal infographics. You can read all about that in my 2011 Annual Report blog post. Since then I have been tracking a few things about me throughout the year.

It is very interesting to look back and see a brief data set about my life and compare it to the previous year. It has been fun working on this and seeing that somehow I watched exactly 100 movies (including repeats) and exactly 100 different eating locations (includes picnics, restaurants and other’s homes). La Lasagna

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. While this video has nothing to do with Thanksgiving, it is full of food. Lasagna to be exact. For quite some time now, Dora has wanted me to make a cooking video for her. Almost like a video recipe card. So this is not a traditional cooking video that you would see on the food network or something. This is just a quick glimpse of the ingredients and process of making a lasagna with fresh pasta. I hope you enjoy the video, I know I enjoyed the lasagna.

Hawaiian Moments

Just to warn you…this video is not for the faint of heart. If you are prone to seizures, I’d reccomend not watching this one. It’s a video of most of the photos taken during my Hawaii trip (not all 772 are in the video). And yes, they are all still photos. There’s no video clips in this.

Italy Book

In July 2010 I ended my study abroad in Switzerland and traveled down to Italy where I met up with my sisters, Joella and Natalia, to take a 2 week giro d’Italia. While there we decided we should make a book of our pictures so we can remember it. Here we are almost two years later and I have finally done it (thanks to a little bit of a push from my sister). It was a fun trip down memory lane and I can’t wait to go back to Italy again. My wife also decided that we need to make a book about our memories of Switzerland together. So that will be another project coming up that is two years late. Here are a few samples of the photos and layout for the Italy book.

Hawaiian Cinemagraph

Dora and Christal Cinemagraph

Recently I discovered a website that I thought was really cool. It’s cinemagraphs.com. The thing I really like about this is that these are not just your typical animated gifs. These instead are great photographs that have subtle movements isolated to only one area which places an emphasis on the subject. So I thought I’d give this a try. This image is not necessarily the best photo, but this was more for me to learn the technical aspects of this. Thanks to Christal and Dora for being my models for this scenic cinemagraph in Hawaii.

Hawaii Infographic

Recently Dora and I took a trip to visit her sister and brother-in-law Christal and Daniel in Hawaii. It was a very fun trip with lots of things to do and see and plenty of time to relax and enjoy the scenery. And of course take lots of photos. This is an infographic I made of a few trip statistics and all the things we did/saw. I’m so glad Daniel and Christal let go visit and stay with them. They were wonderful hosts. Photos and video to come soon. Click here to view the PDF.
